Leveling the playing field – Alina Xynisteri and Tsiakkas Commandaria take highest awards in the 2017 edition of the Decanter World Wine Awards.

Just recently released results this afternoon – including the Platinum awards, the outstanding Xynisteri result for Alina 2016 from Vouni Panayia, is most relevant for the good health of winemaking from indigenous grape varieties in Cyprus.

LifeTime Achievement AwardThe 10th edition of the Cyprus Wine Competition comes at a milestone and it isn’t just the number of editions.
In multiple meanings, it comes at a time where generational renewal in this young industry is in full process. With the last few vintages, we’ve seen it with winemakers passing the baton, now we are seeing it with winery owners, and our hope is that with this momentum, the renewal should not stop there, an entire wine world is there for the new leadership.

I’m definitely convinced that the salvation of Cyprus viticulture will be via safeguarding the study, and the planting, of indigenous grape varieties.

Dr José Vouillamoz recent visit to Cyprus did more than just take the pulse of an ungrafted vineyard.

The brief report ‘The Cyprus Treasure Trove‘, is fruit of a dedicated and a selective visit, carefully highlighting the existing gaps about the island’s ampelographic heritage, the knowledge required to preserve it, and understanding both as keys for the future of singular winemaking in Cyprus.
