Commandaria travels to Vinoble Jerez with Lionspirit W&D as its Ambassador
Being an ambassador of a historic appellation, and that of an intangible cultural heritage no less, is a fine art and a case of identity in the making, when speaking about Commandaria.
In Cyprus where wine progress is measured in semicenturies, it is not hard to find oneself at ease at the heart of wine’s most iconic and monumental venues that is Vinoble in Jerez, a city that embraces wine as its culture and serves it as inspiration for its vibrant lifestyle.
This past monday 1st of June 2026, the Consejo Regulador de Jerez and the Municipality of Jerez marked the conclusion of the 13th edition of The International Exhibition of Noble, Fortified, and Liqueur Wines known as Vinoble. Created to give exceptional stage for “Meditation Wines” during 3 days, Vinoble fills a gap in the wine world by offering a global and exclusive showcase for wines known for their complexity, craftsmanship, and cultural significance – and this 13th edition did fulfill once again, fully with all expectations.
Rare wine, onwards to a unique pathway for Commandaria
Commandaria debut at Vinoble 2026 has been sinuous in the making, but with a single culprit, when all the talk and logistics had been overcome. Back in 2024 as part of the event’s closing masterclass “The Great Venice Tasting” (Cata La Gran Venecia), wine expert Juancho Asenjo already hinted at Commandaria, Cyprus’s ancient dessert wine while highlighting the historic role Venice played in global wine culture.
In this year’s edition and as a first ever occasion, Juancho Asenjo, Spain’s leading figures in the national wine scene, known for his educational work, for his passion for communicating historical wines and his ability to connect with the end consumer, both knowledgeable and uninitiated. Mr. Asenjo presented the world’s oldest named wine, Commandaria, as a keynote tasting of seven exclusive gems: a blend of the white Xynisteri and red Mavro grapes, from primitive, sun-dried wines to fortified wines with legendary vintages, lending an institutional character to this tasting and fostering a sense of inclusion between Europe’s wine regions with the deepest historical roots, also present at the event.
It is thus, that on opening day, for the first time, numerous international professionals and national wine enthusiasts had the opportunity to taste and explore not only the origins of Cyprus Sweet Heritage but also to capture the vivid present and future of Commandaria through various facets and expressions.
7 refined benchmark wines would thus enable the mythical Sala Mezquita, the prayer room of the monumental historical complex at the Alcázar of Jerez, to breathe and travel back in history so as to reconnect with a winemaking that has transcended time with all its merits.
Commandaria Wine, the genuine representation of subsistence farming at high altitudes, carrier of knowledge and heritage while remaining true to its essence, the taste of the warmest freshness of the Mediterranean.
